YARA volunteers paticipated with Canadian Forces, EMO, other agencies Oct 24-27 in EMO building. The ice-storm scenario affected power and normal transportation and communications (WiFi, cell phones and land lines). YARA sent and received messages via Winlink, monitored City and Government radio VHF channels for emergency situation updates, contacted YARA volunteers on the repeaters for updates on the ice-storm and related conditions in their areas, and prepared draft notes of the situation. Also updated the YARA computer tower software in the EMO radio room.
YARA members, as per the mandate of the organization, provide support for various community activities and for government emergency agency emergency practice exercises, all which help hone communications and organizational skills in event volunteers are required to provide support for real emergencies.
